When painting a portrait, I think it is imperative to produce the physical likeness and attributes of the subject but what is just as important is to capture the person's spirit, whether that person be an adult whose life story may be embedded in their facial feature or a very young child whose personality is less forthcoming We often talk about the notion of 'the aura' in the artworld and I think this is particularly applicable to portraiture; as cheesy as it may sound, the eyes really do need to come alive, follow you around the room, tell a thousand stories. Portraiture should be charmingly haunting.

When painting a child's portrait, I treat this the same as an adult's in that I want to capture the child's personality and not produce a generic smiley/happy 'child image' - I want to produce an image that is specific and unique to that child. What I love about children's portraiture is capturing them at a specific point in their development as a person and knowing that the family will have this memory forever.

This black and white series of actresses from the 1970s was based on the notion of non-celebrity. I wanted to take a look at producing images that represented the actress's work rather than just her beauty. I decided to make the images black and white to hint at an era past and make them large in scale to confront the viewer with this beautiful power.

The nudes I paint are about bodily expression, unaffected by the possibility of an overidding facial expression. I like to juxtapose the detail and sumptuousness of the body with a simple monochromatic/ block coloured background or 'landscape'. The figure in the landscape represents the idea of finding yourself in a foreign, surreal environment (perhaps a dream) naked (physically, mentally and spiritually) and being willingly vulnerable.

When asked to produce flower paintings for clients, I approach them in the same way I would a portrait or a nude- I want to bring the image to life, to create a composition with movement and vibrancy whether it be a close up or a wider shot and to give them the same detail as if painting the skin.
